Kwasi Ampene is a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan. He is the author of several books on the rich musical traditions of the Akan of Ghana. His latest book, Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool, was published by Routledge in June 2020. Ampene is also the director of the film, Gone to the Village, a unique and a powerful documentary of the elaborate funerary rites for the Queen Mother of the Asante and the crucial role of female leaders in the socio- political life in Asante culture.
