An adventurous yet flexible pianist, Anthony Wonsey started playing music when he was six. He studied first with his mother (a classical pianist) and then Zilner Randolph. He was fortunate to get a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. After graduating he moved to Boston and played locally with Roy Hargrove and Antonio Hart, among others. While still at Berklee, he toured with Christopher Hollyday, Nnenna Freelon, Kenny Garrett and the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine for five years. During the past few years, Wonsey has played regularly and recorded with many bandleaders, including Carl Allen, Wallace Roney, Nicholas Payton, Kenny Davis, Vincent Herring, Chris Beck, Tim Warfield, and Delfeayo Marsalis. Currently Wonsey is a member of Chico Freeman’s band. His debut CD as a leader, Anthonyology, was recorded for the Japanese Alfa Jazz label and released domestically by Evidence.
